Get involved

At the national level, the Society of Professional Journalists has, for more than 90 years, been dedicated to encouraging a climate in which journalism can be practiced more freely and fully, stimulating high standards and ethical behavior in the practice of journalism and perpetuating a free press.

Benefits of SPJ membership include:

• Opportunities for professional development, including national and regional conferences on writing, reporting and editing as well as on broader topics such as ethics and freedom of information.
• Award programs for professional and student journalists.
• Journalism advocacy.
• Industry news and information, including the monthly Quill magazine, PressNotes daily industry news, SPJ Leads weekly e-news and others.

To join the national SPJ, visit spj.org. You can join online or by mail.

Local chapters are vital to the function of the national SPJ organization, fighting for Freedom of Information and First Amendment rights and supporting working journalists. The Oklahoma Professional Chapter hosts monthly meetings, presents and attends educational programs for local journalists, sponsors a statewide annual contest for journalists and public relations professionals and hosts regular social and networking functions. To learn more about the Oklahoma Chapter, contact President Scott Cooper at scooper@okgazette.com.
