Laura earned her Bachelor of Arts in Journalism from the University of Oklahoma in 1983, and has spent most of her professional career hanging around radio stations. She was a news reporter, producer and anchor at KNOR, WKY, KTOK and KOMA-AM, and won several awards from the Associated Press Broadcasters, SPJ, and the Oklahoma Education Association.

Her second career began in 2005 in fundraising and marketing for public radio station KGOU; her work has been honored by the Public Relations Society of America's Oklahoma City chapter.
