 Dr. Mark Hanebutt, Edith Kinney Gaylord Professor of Journalism Ethics, teaches media ethics and media law courses and seminars. He has more than 30 years of experience in journalism and professional writing and worked for newspapers in Indiana and Florida, including The Orlando Sentinel, as a reporter and editor.
A nationally-syndicated feature writer who has won numerous writing awards, Dr. Hanebutt writes on media issues for the Oklahoma Gazette. He maintains a law practice limited to media-related issues and serves as an expert witness in media-related cases. He is a member of the boards of directors of the Oklahoma Professional Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists and Freedom of Information Oklahoma, Inc. Dr. Hanebutt is also a member of Kappa Tau Alpha national journalism honor society.
Dr. Hanebutt has been awarded the American Press Institute's James H. Ottaway Fellowship and the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication's Gannett Foundation Teaching Fellowship. Research interests are in media law and ethics, media convergence, bias and propaganda, and journalism theory. He holds a juris doctor (J.D.) degree from Oklahoma City University School of Law, a master of arts (M.A.) degree in English from the University of Central Oklahoma and bachelor of arts (B.A.) degree in journalism from the University of Evansville, Indiana.
